The Yemeni Journalists' Union reported that its Secretary General, who is also Assistant Secretary General of the Union of Arab Journalists - Mohammed Shubaita, was wounded by a gunman in the Houthi-controlled city of Sana'a, the Yemeni news agency SABA reported for BTA.

"Our colleague Shubaita was shot near the building of the (former) Ministry of Information after a gunman stopped his car and started shooting directly at the car," the union said in a press release. As a result, the general secretary of the journalists' union was wounded with two shots in the leg and one in the abdomen, and was subsequently taken to hospital, where he received medical care. One of his relatives was killed and another wounded.

The assassination was strongly condemned by the government in Aden. The Minister of Information, Muhammad al-Iryan, strongly condemned the crime.

Al Iryan told journalists that this monstrous crime was committed against the backdrop of an unprecedented increase in repression and abuses by the Houthis against politicians, journalists, media figures, trade unionists, activists and others to refrain from expressing an opinion and championing public causes.

The minister called on the international community, the United Nations, its special envoy for Yemen and organizations that deal with human rights and freedom of the press, especially the International Federation of Journalists and the Union of Journalists, to clearly condemn the crime and immediately announce the Houthis as terrorists, as well as to cut off their financial, political and media sources, and to focus their efforts on supporting the government to assert its control over the country.
